A soldier has the ability to fight for his country, and if qualified he can then receive a military award. This can be ribbons; those that are worn on the uniform. These are given for those who have aquired a skill in training such as pistol marksmanship or rifle marksmanship. Others are service and training awards. There are Medals for Heroism ribbons such as a medal of honor ribbon, a Soldier s Medal, an Airman s Medal and others. Other awards are medals. These medals range in looks and in color. They also range in what they mean and how they may be obtained. A common award is the Purple Heart. This United States Military Decoration is given in the name of the President to any military personell who has been wounded or killed while serving from April 5, 1917 with the U.S. military. Another award is The Medal of Honor which is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is given to military personell of any branch to distinguish themselves as "conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States."
